Understanding Transfer Addiction and Why It Happens

Addiction Transfer

We know this topic can be a scary one and for many of us in the bariatric community, it has been something we have experieinced.

Suddenly, we do things we don't normally do, hide our behaviors and actions from others, and then feel guilty or ashamed for what we did.

Process addictions are common after bariatric surgery, and we wanted to understand why they happen, what we can be on the lookout for, and how we can learn to cope with our emotions and stress in helpful ways.

This week's episode, with Sarah Smith, MHR, LADC, ICAADC, MCAP, CBHCMS-A/C, dives fearlessly into this discussion, and we are thankful for her expert support.

If you have struggled or are struggling with process and transfer addiction, you are not alone and there is nothing to be ashamed about.

Sarah just launched an on-demand mini-course in BariNation that teaches the basics of transfer addiction: how to recognize it, why it could be happening, and how to shift your behaviors and actions to align more with your long-term goals.

She also leads a private, confidential Addiction Transfer Support Group in BariNation every Monday at 5 p.m. PST / 8 p.m. EST. In this group, you can tap into her expert support and connect with peers who are experiencing the same thing.

Check out our full support calendar here. And as a member, you can attend as many live events as you want. You membership unlocks unlimited access to everything that lives in BariNation.

Until Next Week

No one is immune to the instinctual pull of our brains to keep us safe, and we all work through our emotions and stress differently.

Even if you do not think you could experience this, it is worth watching and listening to this week's episode because the more you know, the more you will know.

And be sure to check out the resources linked in this episode's show notes. Sarah passed along some excellent research articles about addiction transfer prevalence and our increased chances of process addition after bariatric surgery.

You've got this and we've got you.
