Insights

At this year's ASMBS Conference, BariNation Founder April Williams, spoke twice; once to the High School Pathways Program Participants and on Thursday's Shame and Stigma Panel, where she and Practice Partner Dr. Cribbins presented research-based strategies to help revisional patients lift the shame and stigma they might be feeling about undergoing another bariatric procedure.

Why is this important?

Because research has shown that 60-70 percent of people who have obesity have experienced shame and stigma from a medical provider.

Members of the BariNation Community shared their own experiences with us for this panel presentation.

➡️ We want to call out something important: You are no doubt working diligently to limit and eliminate shame and stigma from every patient experience. But your patients have more than likely experienced these things from a provider in the past, and they are bringing that trauma and experience into the room with you.

Why are they sharing their stories of shame and stigma with us but not necessarily with you?

Because in BariNation, we create safe places for patients to say the scary things out loud. They can speak their truth and have their story be heard without the fear of judgment.

We are proud to play this role in their life and we are excited to pass these insights onto you, so you can utilize them to inform your patient flows and discussion guides.

We can be a bridge that helps you keep a pulse on the trends and discussions that can positivly impact you, your team, and your patients.

Here is just one of the many examples we gathered from our members about the shame, stigma, and bias they have felt along their journey.
